Just as the motorway network transformed road transport in the 1960s, High-Speed Rail (HSR) has the potential to revolutionise UK travel – and to do so in a way that is both sustainable and conducive to the economic growth and development of the UK as a whole.

Mainline Europe currently boasts 3,480 miles of high-speed railway lines with a further 2,160 miles under construction and 5,280 more miles planned for the future. Britain, meanwhile, has just 68 miles of high-speed lines in operation, between London St Pancras and the Channel Tunnel. Clearly, we have some serious catching up to do, which is why the UK’s major cities and drivers of economic growth, supported by independent groups such as Greengauge 21 and Core Cities, are calling for a commitment to the development of a high-speed rail network that meets the challenges of the 21st century.
